After retiring from a 27 year career with PP&L as a Residential and
Commercial Division
Manager, Buzz Thielman had a dream to build a company that would assist
large corporations, commercial businesses and industries in saving
energy. With humble beginnings, Buzz started RHT Energy Solutions and
has developed an impressive list of clients: Energy Trust of
Oregon, Pacific Power, Avista, and the Bonneville Administration, among
others. The business side is remarkable, but RHT is our February
Spirit of Green Success story because they "walk the sustainable walk".
Starting in the RHT parking lot, it is clear that they stand apart from other businesses. My first sign that they “walk the walk” – a large solar panel system located between their two offices – the system generates 70% of their energy use (right in the middle of Medford!). I’m met by friendly, professional employees and what appears to be a very pleasant office environment – vital for creativity, innovation and hard work.
Then I meet Buzz - from the start, he is on fire, talking about everything from the latest in solar technology to their latest energy efficiency projects. This guy clearly has a passion for what he does and cares about how he goes about his business – his integrity in giving clients the best product, community involvement, a “green” office environment and his acknowledgement of one of his greatest assets – his employees. The “Spirit of Green” permeates every aspect of this business.
Even the house that Buzz remodeled for an office has historical sustainability. It was once owned by Richard Applegate, great grandson of Lindsay Applegate (who emigrated by wagon train in the pioneer days). Buzz wanted to preserve the history, so he chose to remodel it, leaving design elements intact and used energy efficiency in every aspect of the remodel, including the heat exchanger, and lighting.
Success built on a dream, hard work, and social sustainability – Buzz and RHT get our vote for this month’s “Spirit of Green” award.
