Southern Oregon Seed Oils inc. (S.O.S.) is a venture to build a viable industry revolved around seed oils and the rotational crops and products that are produced. Basically attempting to take a primarily grass hay agricultural region into a variety of grain and seed crops, that produce the Oil, Meal (seed cake) and process them into a variety of products.
Oil :
1. Industrial lubricants and fuel
2. Nutritional supplements
3. Culinary cooking and baking
4. Cosmetic and skin care
Meal:
1. Animal feed
2. Nutritional additives (high protein, Omega 3, and Resveratrol/Pycnogenols)
3. Organic fertilizers
Along with the Sunflower and Camelina that we grow, we are also working with AVOVA (Applegate Valley Oregon Vintners Assoc.) To develop addtional products that can be sold from the tasting rooms in the valley.
In March of this year, David Palmer of Jacksonville Vinyards and Fiasco winery supplied us with a few tons of Pomace, from one of their late press varieties of wine they make. Because it's made of grape products it doesn't cut into their 50% rule the state has on what products and services each winery has.
So, we dried the pomace, separated the seed and made Grapeseed oil. and Seed cake. We took the seed cake to Butte Creek mill and had the seed cake milled into a fine flour, that is used in nutritional capsules and for a baking additive for breads, cookies and pizza, as well as for fruit smoothie drinks and sauces. Grape seed and skins have 50 times the antioxidant properties of vit. E and 20 times that of Vit C. They actually cause cancer cells to kill themselves, there is a medical term for this, it escapes me right now.
Many of the local wineries have ground that is not suitable for more vines, so this year we planted about 20 acres of sunflower at the Schmidt winery, which we will harvest in Nov. and press over the winter. Late fall we will plant more Camelina there as well.
The sunflower meal is becoming a favorite for the egg layer and broiler chickens in our area, and when mixed with the Camelina meal it gives a high quality long shelf life balanced Omega 3,6,and 9 feed supplement that is passed on to the meat and egg products.
We are also working with Nick Wannamacher from the O.S.U. chemistry dept. on building a pilot plant for his biofuel processor that he invented last year. It is about 40% more effecient that typical processors and uses no water to wash the fuel, which is a huge plus when it comes to waste and conservation. We hope to have the funding in place by the end of the year, in which we can build the first of it's kind processor.
Our Klamath falls trial worked out well, we are planting at least 100 acres this winter over there, and hope to have thousands of acres planted in the next year. The Camelina crop requires no irrigation, and very little fertilizers, so the input costs and water demand pressures they are having could be reduced greatly by planting the Camelina. Richard Roseburg with the O.S.U. alternative crops div. is helping us get the word out. I just have to finish the report on our trial plot and then spend some time meeting potential grower partners in the area.
Our location in Murphy is on 6 acres, and the site of the old Murphy mill. We are working to develop the property as the Green Zone, with hopes of having an indoor (winter) and outdoor (summer) markets, where local producers can sell their products year round. Being centralized to our wine and organic farming community i think it has a good chance for success.
We are also working with some local custom farmers on growing our naked pumpkin variety. We have developed a large seed stock and have high hopes for it's medicinal and culinary properties.
