Sustainable Building Practices & Waste Management

Solar Pavilion, Oregon Green Expo
2:00-3:00pm, Saturday, June 25th

Joan Kirkpatrick the owner of Kirkpatrick Consulting.  She is a participant and presenter of the National Sustainable Building Adviser program, Master Land Steward and Master Recycler. Joan's presentation will focus on the importance of integrated sustainable building that includes sustainable waste practice. Waste management is a much neglected part of building. 30% of land fills are filled with construction waste. The average construction waste is 4lb. per square foot which translates into 8,000 pounds of waste in a 2,000 square foot home.

The most important part is the 3 R’s –

  • Reducing – by utilizing advanced framing techniques, correct measurement of materials needed for the building. Waste reduction practices can reduce waste from 30% to 7% and as low as 5%.
  • Reusing – wood and drywall waste can be chipped and used onsite as a soil amendment. 100% of cardboard can be re-used for soil amendment and weed abatement instead of plastic materials.
  • Recycling – the last of the 3 R’s – recycle the small amount of waste that is left!

Did You Know?

3 Myths About Green Building Products

Myth #1 - Green products are more expensive.
Fact: Thanks to economies of scale due to high volumes, many green products today are competitively priced versus "brown" counterparts; and often can make up for premium pricing many times over during their lifetimes due to savings on energy and water, or simply better performance and value.
Myth #2 - Consumers don't want to buy green products.
Fact: Green building represented $61 billion a year in sales in 2010, according to McGraw Hill publications. Green Products are the fastest growing product segement of the commercial and residential building industry.
Myth #3 - Green products don't work as well.
Fact: Many prominent brands have recently been developed specifically to work as well or better than regular products. Additionally for these better working products consumers are willing to pay a premium price to boot!
source:  Greener Product, LLC.

The "Green" Consumer Sector is Going Mainstream...

  • Nationally, 80% of consumers say they are buying at least some green products
  • Oregon consumers see buying ‘green’ as a priority - more 92% of Oregon consumers reported buying the same or more environmentally friendly products compared to six moths ago
